NSW Digital Drivers Licences now available for VOI in property transactions

One of the most significant advancements in identification in recent years in Australia is the introduction of digital drivers’ licences (DDLs). In our previous blog, we looked at what the DDL landscape across Australia currently looks like.  In line with this growing trend, Scantek is excited to announce that NSW Digital Drivers’ Licences are now supported in the conveyancing portal, providing both conveyancers and clients with even more streamlined, secure, and efficient ways to satisfy their Verification of Identity (VOI) requirements for property transactions.

In this blog, we’ll look at how NSW digital drivers’ licences work, as well as how this new update to the Scantek conveyancing portal benefits conveyancers and your clients.

So, how does a NSW Digital Driver’s Licence work?

Digital Drivers Licences are a modern, convenient alternative to carrying physical identification cards and are designed with robust security measures such as encryption to protect the user’s personal information. As more Australians adopt digital technology in their everyday lives, DDLs are becoming increasingly popular, with many preferring the convenience of carrying their ID on their phone rather than in their wallet.

In NSW, DDLs have the same legal status as the plastic cards.  NSW driver’s licence holders can use their Service NSW app to store and present their digital driver’s licence the same way they would the physical licence. Whether this is age verification in hospitality venues or law enforcement checks on the road and now when buying or selling a property.

But how many people are really using Digital ID options?

The shift towards digital ID systems is part of a broader movement in Australia toward digitising many essential services. Despite what you may think, this movement is being embraced by young Australians (unsurprisingly) and not-so-young Australians too. According to a recent article compiled by insurer QBE, 4.5 million NSW licence holders – almost 75 per cent of drivers – are now using the NSW digital licence via the Service NSW app.

These trends have significant implications for conveyancers who may mistakenly assume that older clients, in particular, would use traditional physical ID documents as part of their VOI. In fact, the statistics show us that Australians of all ages are comfortable with digital tools and utilising digital solutions such as a digital driver’s licence.

How does Scantek support the use of NSW Digital Drivers’ Licences?

With the latest update to Scantek’s platform, NSW Digital Drivers Licences are now a fully supported form of identification for property sales and purchases. This means that conveyancers can now accept digital driver’s licences as part of their VOI processes, further reducing the reliance on physical documents.

Scantek’s VOI solution is fully integrated with the Service NSW platform, dramatically enhancing the customer’s digital VOI experience.  The process is quick and secure, further reducing the need for physical meetings and documents.

How does this benefit conveyancers?

The inclusion of NSW Digital Drivers Licences in the conveyancing portal brings several benefits to conveyancers and their clients, especially in terms of convenience and compliance:

  • Enhanced Security

Digital drivers’ licences offer higher levels of security than physical cards. They come with encrypted technology, ensuring that sensitive personal information is protected during the verification process. Combined with Scantek’s back-to-source checks (done directly with Service NSW), biometric facial matching and liveness checks, this offers conveyancers a robust, multi-layered approach to identity verification, significantly reducing the risk of fraud.

  • Improved Client Experience

With more Australians moving towards digital solutions, clients increasingly expect the same convenience in their property transactions. The ability to complete a VOI check anywhere, any time, using their digital driver’s licence eliminates the need for clients to shuffle through their wallet to find their physical driver’s licence, let alone make a physical trip to a post office or their conveyancer’s office. In many cases, NSW drivers don’t even have their physical ID anymore as they now rely upon the digital one.

  • Streamlined Process for Conveyancers

For conveyancers, this update means less administrative burden. As we continue to expand the types of ID documents that can be verified in the Scantek portal, conveyancers can complete VOI checks more efficiently.

  • Compliance with ARNECC Regulations

The Australian Registrars’ National Electronic Conveyancing Council (ARNECC) Model Participation Rules require conveyancers to securely verify the identity of their clients. By integrating NSW Digital Drivers Licences into the VOI portal, Scantek helps conveyancers meet these stringent compliance obligations while enhancing the security of identity verification.
